Introduction


Women’s Cancer Initiative’s partnership with ELLE magazine in the Elle Carnivals where Fashion Joins Hands against Breast Cancer, helped create awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection. The Ogaan Cancer Foundation has been promoting and augmenting efforts for the cause of breast cancer through its flagship publication, ELLE, where the funds raised from the Carnivals are donated to Women’s Cancer Initiative. The success of the Carnivals in the cities of Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi, was due to the tremendous support from all those who attended. The carnivals focused on the importance of early detection in a festive ambience.

Over 100 leading designers from across the country contributed exclusively designed merchandise which included western and Indian clothes, bags, jewellery, T-shirts, stoles, bags, footwear available at affordable prices. All proceeds of the sale were given to the Foundation. The fashion industry comes together by donating apparel and accessories to be retailed at the carnival, with leading designers Narendra Kumar, Gayatri Khanna, Wendell Rodricks, Savio Jon, Nandita Mahtani, Meera Mital, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Tarun Tahiliani, Sabyasachi, Kavita Bhartia, JJ Valaya, Ashish Soni, Ritu Kumar, Rohit Gandhi & Rahul Khanna, as well as younger designers like Nachiket Barve, Gaurav Gupta, Atsu, VJ Balhara, Pankaj & Nidhi, Nida Mahmood. High end designer stores such as Bombay Electric, Melange, Ensemble and Ogaan among others also lent their support.

The ELLE Carnival for a Cause is a unique way to raise funds, since the merchandise is all affordably priced under Rs. 5,000, enabling a wider audience to contribute and be a part of the initiative.

The Carnival atmosphere was enhanced by fun games for the children, fortune tellers, tarot card readers and a photo booth along with counters full of wonderful merchandise, donated by the designers for sale. The Women’s Cancer Initiative set up a stall where specialy designed t-shirts and pink towels were available along with a range of DIVO hairbrushes which were kindly donated by Ruchika Bhojwani for the cause.

Showing support for the cause in Mumbai, the Carnival was attended by members from society, fashion and Bollywood like Dia Mirza, Kunal Kohli, Purab Kohi, Aki Narula, Raman Lamba, Little Shilpa, Sabira Merchant, Byram Jeejeebhoy, Aarti & Kailash Surendranath, Maneck Davar,Tasneem Mehta, Sabina & AD Singh attended.

In Mumbai, the well known model and actress, Lisa Haydon and her sister Mallika, made balloon animals much to the delight of all the children present.

In Bangalore, the Carnival was attended by many from the ex-pat community and well known personalities such as Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Ritu Mallya, Biddu, Kunal Kohli and Prasad Bidappa.

The Delhi Carnival saw the likes of Kavita & Hari Bhartia, Shobhana Bhartia, Kalyani Chawla, Ayesha Thapar, Ramola Bachchan, Shekhar Gupta, Dilip & Devi Cherian, Sunita Kohli, Sunil Mittal, Rakesh Thakore and Abraham, Nisha Singh and Ashish Soni.
